House for Birdwood is conceptually designed as a canopy roof floating above a cascading creek bed.
Taking advantage of its steep gully site, the house considers three distinct spaces typically encountered in a sub-tropical rainforest setting. The forest floor, the understorey, and the canopy levels each offering a unique experience and varied connection with the gardens and greater landscape. The muted and natural colours of the buildings material palate, like camouflage, obscure the size and shape of the home in its bush setting.
Organic shaped rooms, as if honed by water, run continuously inside and outside blurring where the house and landscape begin. Off-board concrete ceilings, rough and course, define the canopy and contrast with the smooth rendered walls.
